Dr. Sandeep Aggarwal attended medical school at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi and completed his Masters in Surgery (MS) followed by Senior- Residency from AIIMS. He also completed a 1-year Research fellowship at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, USA and a 4 month period at Homerton University, London, UK as a Commonwealth Fellow where he was trained in Bariatric Surgery. He has been a Faculty member in the Department of Surgical Disciplines at AIIMS since 1999 and was head of Surgery Unit II till June 2024. He is the foremost Bariatric Surgeon in Delhi.

Dr. Sandeep is a renowned Laparoscopic, Bariatric, GI and Renal Transplant Surgeon in Delhi with more than 30 years of surgical experience. He is the chairman of the Institute of Bariatric, Minimal Access, GI and Robotic Surgery. Dr. Sandeep is widely recognized as a global leader in the field of Bariatric surgery having pioneered and nurtured this specialty in the public sector in India through his excellent clinical and research work in this field. He has performed more than 1300 bariatric surgery procedures, more than 400 renal transplants and more than 10000 laparoscopic surgical procedures including complex GI surgical procedures, adrenalectomy, splenectomy, hernias etc.

Dr. Sandeep is an active researcher with more than 140 publications and several book chapters to his credit. He is a dedicated teacher, has trained several residents and fellows, performed live surgery at several workshops and has delivered more than 200 invited lectures at various national and international conferences. Dr. Sandeep holds editorial positions in several reputed journals including Editor of Journal of Minimal Access Surgery (JMAS). He has been invited as an expert on several Doordarshan health programs and is frequently quoted in media (both print and electronic) on bariatric surgery topics. Dr. Sandeep has been a Convenor/member of several expert committees. He was awarded the Best Researcher Award by the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo Surgeons (IAGES) in the year 2020.

Invited to be Section –editor of an international book authored by the World’s leading experts on Bariatric Surgery titled “Obesity, Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery: A Practical Guide”. Contributed a chapter on the Technique of Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG), the most popular bariatric surgical procedure.
• Member of various Expert committees and meetings to develop guidelines for issues related to Bariatric Surgery in India. Nominated member of the executive committee of Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society of India (OSSI) for a period of three years. Frequently quoted in the national media-both print and electronic. Has been invited as an expert on Doordarshan health shows several times.
